No you don't need any special decoders or anything it works off the IDE cable like your hard drive or other cdroms. It does however need DVD playing software. Mine came with WinDVD and it seems difficult to use the drive as a DVD drive with any other software than WinDVD PC Friendly sucked. So try installing just one of the programs that came with it. Good luck.

Good Driver and it worked

There is no driver required for XP just plug in your camera and it will detect as a mass storage device. It takes a few minutes to initialize just be patient and you will see the drive letter pop up.
